Comprised entirely of glazed stoneware, artist Kevin Marshall‘s exhibition Free from Ill Will reminds us that we are here for such a short time.

Each piece begins with clay that surrenders to gravity. Kevin embosses each with geometric patterns and in the final stage of his creative process, blesses the work with brush calligraphy. The blessings are often written twice, once in an alphabet called Phagspa and once in abbreviated Latin script. His work speaks to how the clay and the stone will one day be in shards; clay becomes rock, and rock lasts as close to forever as anything humans have made. Kevin’s work is a reminder of our brief existences when compared to the eternity of stoneware. Each piece’s blessing (which is either inscribed or implied) is to be used for this fleeting time. Marshall’s functional fine art pottery is suitable for the table and has fascinating textures to engage a sense of touch. Although agreeable as tableware, some collectors value the work for looks alone. Each endearingly gnarled and tangled piece is decorated in his unique and distinctive style. The artist and each piece of stoneware reflect on ‘ill will’ being one of the veils to awakening. May we all be free from ill will.

Free from Ill Will will be on display at Gallery 110 from November 3 – 26, 2022. Work on pedestals will be available to take home upon purchase. Hanging work will be available to take home at the end of the exhibition. The gallery is open to the public from 12PM to 5PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and by appointment.
